Around three months ago, after seeing all the cool people arrive here, I decided to launch this zany zine on Substack.
Since then I’ve tried to write some funny art content like this banger that’s been our most popular post for several weeks now.
We like to make our readers chuckle politely at the least. Whether we’ve succeeded is up to you (I promise we’ll try harder either way!)
Our real goal is to help get artists and writers rewarded each month.
However, we may have been delusional when we originally set the payout terms. We said the subscription revenue would be split four ways. That’s confusing, even to us.
So, since we have some subscribers now (thanks to all 104 of you so far!), we thought I’d update how we’ll do things here.
In particular, we are changing the monthly payouts drawn from the paid subscription pool to a two-way split:
50% of proceeds from paid subscriptions will go to a chosen artist or writer, and 50% will go to this publication each month.
Any reader can nominate a working artist that they think deserve a little love in cash form. Who doesn’t love a warm hug from a $10 bill?
The nominated artist or writer does not have to be active on Substack, btw. They just have to be real, with some kind of evidence of recent work. That being said, you can also nominate your favourite Substack writer(s). No, they don’t have to write about art.
And while we don’t encourage it, you can even nominate yourself—we won’t tell anyone, you greedy bugger.
We’ll then use Google Gemini AI to choose one of the nominated names each month at random. Those nominees who aren’t chosen will be put back into the pool for the next month’s draw.
The payouts will begin when we reach 10 paid subscribers. Right now, we are nine short.
I realize money is tight these days. So I’ve created a promotion that gives 50% off monthly or annual subscriptions for a year! That amounts to $4 a month CDN (for 12 months), or $37.50 CDN for the entire year at once.

Meanwhile, we’ve also done some administrative stuff since we first launched. We condensed the name of this pub a little so no one misses the brilliant play on words. You’ll notice it’s now aMuse Zine and no longer the former a Muse Zine. I also removed some of the AI-generated junk from the newsletters.
